About AHFID
Africa Hub for Innovation and Development LTD/GTE (AHFID) is a strategic development
organization leveraging technology, and human-centered innovation to address complex challenges
across Africa. From public health to education, governance, and economic inclusion, we use digital
transformation and data-driven approaches to generate real-world impact.
AHFID is scaling its frontier work in AI for Social Good through strategic investments in Artificial
Intelligence, Machine Learning, Health/Social Informatics, and Ethical Data Systems, creating
intelligent applications that serve marginalized populations and strengthen systems. We are now
recruiting a high-caliber professional to lead this work
Position Summary
The Associate Manager, Artificial Intelligence & Social Informatics will provide senior-level
leadership in designing, developing, deploying, and operationalizing AI and informatics solutions within
AHFID’s technical ecosystem. This role blends advanced technical expertise with a strong
understanding of development-sector applications—particularly in health systems strengthening,
humanitarian analytics, education technology, and community intelligence.
The successful candidate will lead high-impact AI/ML initiatives, develop scalable platforms, and work
collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams, research institutions, and government stakeholders to
create ethically grounded, data-driven social innovations.
Key Responsibilities
1. AI/ML Design, Development & Deployment
• Design and develop robust machine learning models, including supervised, unsupervised, and
reinforcement learning algorithms for social impact use cases (e.g., health risk prediction,
natural language classification, anomaly detection in public datasets).
• Build production-grade AI pipelines using tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn,
FastAI, and integrate these into scalable applications.
• Implement data engineering workflows, including ingestion, transformation, validation, and
streaming architectures using platforms like Apache Spark, Kafka, Airflow, or equivalent.
• Collaborate with software developers to deploy AI models through RESTful APIs,
microservices, or containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Design and manage knowledge graphs, ontologies, and semantic systems relevant to
healthcare, education, and humanitarian information systems.
2. Informatics Architecture & Data Strategy• Lead the development of interoperable social informatics systems that integrate structured,
semi-structured, and unstructured data across multiple platforms and sources (e.g., DHIS2,
EMR systems, IoT devices, satellite data).
• Oversee the deployment of FHIR-based or HL7-compliant health information exchange layers
and open-source architecture (OpenHIE).
• Guide the development of data quality, data governance, and metadata standards across
organizational platforms.
• Utilize Natural Language Processing (NLP) for localized language insights, chatbot
development, and text classification tasks supporting social engagement or health behavior
change.
3. Research, Innovation, and Prototyping
• Develop and lead proof-of-concept (PoC) models for emerging technologies such as federated
learning, edge computing, computer vision, and generative AI (e.g., LLMs) for localized
application in humanitarian or development contexts.
• Publish white papers, technical briefs, and open-source toolkits to disseminate learnings and
support replication of AHFID-developed AI tools.
• Develop AHFID’s AI sandbox environments for rapid experimentation with responsible AI
toolkits (e.g., IBM AI Fairness 360, Microsoft InterpretML, Google’s What-If Tool).
4. Strategic Leadership & Capacity Building
• Translate complex AI and informatics concepts into actionable strategies and business cases for
internal teams, funders, and policy partners.
• Provide technical mentorship to internal developers, data scientists, and sectoral program leads.
• Lead capacity-building workshops for partners and stakeholders, especially around AI ethics,
AI explainability, algorithmic bias, and responsible data use.
• Shape AI-related program strategies and concept notes in collaboration with the Business
Development team, donors, and implementation partners.
5. Partnerships & Thought Leadership
• Engage actively in global and regional AI and digital health/data science communities,
contributing to dialogue on AI for Development (AI4D).
• Serve as AHFID’s technical representative in national and continental AI governance working
groups and regulatory discussions.
• Build technical partnerships with academic institutions, innovation labs, and research think
tanks.
Qualifications
Education
• Master’s degree (minimum) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science,
Health Informatics, or closely related disciplines.
• A Ph.D. or professional certifications in AI/ML or applied data science is a strong advantage.
Experience• 5–10 years of professional experience, with a significant focus on applied machine learning,
data systems architecture, or digital innovation in a development or public sector setting.
• At least 2–3 years of leadership in managing technical teams or large-scale AI/data projects.
• Demonstrated experience in deploying end-to-end AI/ML solutions in production
environments, ideally for public benefit.
Technical Proficiency
• Languages & Frameworks: Python (primary), R, SQL, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, Scikit
learn, Flask, FastAPI
• DevOps & Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Git, Linux-based environments
• Big Data Tools: Apache Spark, Hadoop, Hive, Kafka
• Cloud Platforms: AWS, Azure, or GCP (including tools like SageMaker, BigQuery, or Azure
ML)
• Visualization: Power BI, Streamlit, Dash, D3.js
• Data Pipelines & Workflow Orchestration: Apache Airflow, Prefect
• Standards & Interoperability: HL7/FHIR, OpenMRS, DHIS2, OpenSRP
