The Asset We Cannot Afford to Lose: Prioritizing Women’s Health in 2026

As we settle into the rhythm of the new year, our calendars are naturally filled with strategy sessions, quarterly goals, and operational targets. In the rush to meet KPIs and drive growth, it is easy to overlook the foundation upon which all our success is built: the health and well-being of our people.

At Africa Hub for Innovation & Development (AHFID) , we recognize that human capital is the most valuable asset in any economy. When we protect our people, we protect our future.

This week marks Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (January 20–26), a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about a disease that impacts thousands of families across Nigeria.

While this is a medical topic, it is a critical conversation for professional networks and business leaders. Health is not just a personal matter; it is a collective responsibility. Here is why we are lending our voice to this cause today.

The Reality in Numbers
To understand the urgency, we must look at the data. The statistics represent our colleagues, our mentors, our sisters, and our friends. According to recent data from the ICO/IARC Information Centre on HPV and Cancer and the World Health Organization (WHO):

The Ranking: Cervical cancer is the 2nd most frequent cancer among women in Nigeria between the ages of 15 and 44.
The Burden: Every year, approximately 12,000+ women in Nigeria are diagnosed with the disease.
The Opportunity: Globally, over 95% of cervical cancer cases are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Because we have vaccines and effective screening methods, this is considered one of the most preventable forms of cancer.

Breaking the Silence in the Workplace
In many professional circles, health struggles are often kept private until they become critical. There is often a stigma around taking time off for “routine” checks.

By speaking openly about prevention on a corporate platform, we hope to change that narrative. We want to normalize the idea that taking time off for a screening is not “lost time”, it is a strategic investment in longevity. A healthy workforce is a resilient workforce.

Our Call to Action
We champion a proactive approach to health. We urge our professional network, our partners, and our staff to take action today:

Prioritize Screening: If you have delayed your health checks, let this be your reminder to schedule an appointment. Early detection saves lives.
Spread the Word: Share this message with your colleagues and family. Information is the first line of defense.
Support One Another: Let us create work environments where prioritizing health is encouraged and supported.

A healthy nation is a thriving nation. Let us all work towards a future where cervical cancer is a thing of the past
